Curriculum

Hello! My name is Maria Evardone and I am blessed to be teaching at Our Lady of Guadalupe School.  My current homeroom teaching assignment is second grade.  I consider myself a bit of an expert in the areas of English Language Arts, Reading, as well as Social Studies.

At my grade level, there are certain curricular highlights every year.

In Religion class, the second grade will celebrate the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.  They will prepare for the sacrament by participating in the Rite of Welcome followed by the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.  These important Catholic traditions will help the children understand the grace and of God by remembering the sacrifices Jesus made to forgive us for our sins and give us everlasting life.

Math curriculum for the second highlights addition and subtraction.  The students will learn how to solve problems through different techniques.  In addition,  they will learn how to use money and tell time.  The class will delve into fraction, as well.

Reading and Language development at this grade level will help them strengthen their reading and comprehension skills.  They will begin reading chapter books and explore the who, what, when, why, and how of the stories they read.  By the end of the school year, the second grade would be able to write summaries that will show their understanding of the concepts of the stories successfully using the tools from their lessons in English and Language Arts.

Science lessons will emphasize such concepts as how plants and animals grow and change.  The students will learn about the Earth's resources as well as its characteristics long ago.  They will participate in experiments and observations that will help them understand the lesson as it relates to the physical world around them.

Social Studies curriculum at this grade level focuses on key concepts such as family life and family trees.  The second grade will learn about the fifty states of the United States and their geographical characteristics as well as their unique cultures.  Continents will be explored which will open the world and its possibilities.

There is so much to learn and do in Grade 2. Every year also takes us on its own special journey.   There are many traditional events and a few surprises.  In the past, our curriculum has led us to such activities as educational field trips to Knotts Berry Farm and science museums.  The second grade has participated in a school wide science fair and field days.  They attend assemblies that promotes academic goals and honor student achievements encouraging the love of learning.

Come by our campus and I can tell you even more about Grade 2!
